Merengue originates from the Dominican republic, and is a style both in music and in dance. Partners dance together in a closed position to a 2/4 beat. The leader holds the follower's waist with the leaders right hand, while holding the follower's right hand with the leaders left hand. During dancing knees are slightly bend to the left and right, making the hips move in the same direction. The hips of both the leader and the follower move in the same direction throughout the dance. While stepping the beat different twist and turns can be done in either a closed or an open position. Only the legs move while the upper body is kept proudly still.
